Hot Briquette Iron (HBI)

Hot iron briquette is a form of sponge iron that has been compressed at a temperature higher than 650 degrees Celsius and its density is more than 5 thousand kilograms per cubic meter.

HBI was created to solve some of the problems of sponge iron such as transportation. The hot briquette of sponge iron has less porosity, and this makes it show a lower tendency to combine with oxygen and self-ignite. Self-ignition is one of the problems of sponge iron during storage and transportation.

HBI’s main market is electric arc furnaces made of steel, but it is also used in BOF furnaces as well as blast furnaces.
