Pig iron is obtained by re-smelting iron ore together with iron and scrap steel and is accompanied by steps to remove unwanted elements such as phosphorus and sulfur. Depending on the type of application, the amount of carbon and silicon are reduced to the desired level (2 to 3.5 and 1 to 3% by weight, respectively). Other elements are also added to the melt during casting and before the final formation.
